Calling all Hula Hoopers!!!

I saw this recently on the Disney Family website and I just had to share it!  What a creative way to reuse items like an old hula hoop and old t-shirts than combining them to make a rug!!!  Not only is it an eco-friendly craft, but it's also SUPER cute!!!!!

Hula Hoop Rug

by Nicole Blasenak Shapiro From FamilyFun Magazine

Total Time Needed:
2-3 Hours
What does it take to transform a pile of old T-shirts into spectacular works of woven art? Just a spare hula hoop or embroidery hoop and the techniques we'll show you here. The oversize looms and easy-to-use loops of T-shirt fabric make these projects particularly appealing to beginning weavers. Learn the basic hoop weaving technique by crafting a colorful accent rug to brighten up a room. And if you want to take the weaving a little further, check out our basket and chair pad weaves
Before you begin, some terms you need to know: the warp is the material you string on the hoop, the weft is the material you weave with.

Materials
  • Scissors
  • About a dozen T-shirts
  • 33-inch hula hoop
X

Instructions
  1. null For the warp, cut 1-inch-wide loops from the bodies of one or two tees (we found a boy's large worked best on our 33-inch hoop), removing the hem and stopping at the sleeves. Ideally these loops should all be the same color; we used two colors for clarity in our photographs. You'll need a total of 11 loops. For the weft, cut at least 50 loops from the remaining shirts. Save the unused sleeves for the basket project.
  2. null Stretch one warp loop over the hula hoop, as shown.
  3. Step 3 Add and secure a second loop, perpendicular to the first.
  4. null Repeat, filling in the spaces, until all 11 loops are in place.
  5. null Push together two warp loops at the top of the hula hoop, as shown. This creates an odd number of warp spokes in your wheel, which allows the overunder pattern of the weft to alternate with each new row.
  6. Step 6 Secure the first weft loop to the center of one of the warp spokes (we chose the doubled spoke from step 5) by wrapping it around the warp and then looping it back through itself.
  7. null Begin weaving the weft over and under the warp spokes, forming a tight spiral. For now, treat both parts of each warp spoke as a single unit, weaving over or under the two together. As you work, push the weft material toward the center of the hoop and keep it just snug. If you pull the weft tight, the rug will develop lumps or bends. When you reach the end of the piece of weft, add a new loop by threading it through the end of the first and back through itself.
  8. null When your rug is about 8 inches across, begin treating each warp spoke as two individual strips instead of a single unit, weaving over or under each strand instead of going over or under the doubled spoke. This increases the number of warp spokes, improving the structure of the project. When you get to the two warp spokes that you pushed together at the top of the loom, separate them. Treat one of the spokes as two individual strips, but continue to treat the other as a single spoke. This maintains the odd number of warp spokes.
  9. null When the rug is the size you want, but no closer than 8 inches from the edge of the hula hoop, snip open your weft loop.
  10. null Tie the ends around a warp spoke, and tuck the ends into the rug.
  11. null Cut the warp spokes off the hoop one at a time.
  12. null Tie the ends in pairs, then trim them to make a fringe or tuck them back into the rug.

Muah!!

Preschool at Home

My 2 1/2 year old son is desperately wanting to go to school like all of the older children he knows that just recently started their new school years.  However, he's not old enough to attend a pre-school in our area, so I decided to have a little "school" for him here at home.  After deciding that I wanted to stick with just the basics, I decided the best way to incorporate letters was to have a "letter of the day".  I've assigned each day with a specific letter and everything we do during that day will revolve around that letter.   For example, starting with letter "A" this past Tuesday, I first showed him the letter A (I got letter posters from a school supply store and hung them on the wall for his reference) and he identified it as being an A.  Next, we looked at books...I have some great alphabet books that break well known items down by each letter of the alphabet...."Look and Learn- ABC" is one of my favorites (see below).  We looked at and identified all of the things shown in the books that started with the letter A.

Next, we incorporated a craft with the letter A...I wanted to use something he knew pretty well, so I went with an apple.  I used an apple shaped template on red paper and cut it out.  I then cut out a small rectangle in brown paper and a leaf shape in green paper to be used for the stem and leaf.  I also cut out a large "A" to put onto the apple so that he could associate the two together.  I let him glue all of the pieces and assemble the apple.  I also wanted to use people or characters that he knows well to also identify with the letter A....for this, he happens to have 2 cousins named AJ and Austin, so I printed out small pictures of them and listed their names, so that he could see that they started with A.  (I let him glue the pictures onto card stock as another craft for the day)

Next was lunch, where we ate things starting with A.  Now, I realize that there aren't food items for every letter in the alphabet (especially food items that a toddler will eat!!), but I did try to incorporate a few things for our letter A...he had applesauce, apricots and apple juice.   I think at least having one thing with the letter helps!

After lunch, we went outside for "recess"...where we explored the outdoors looking for things that start with the letter A.  This isn't an easy task, and it may not be possible for all letters, but we did end up finding an acorn and an ant for A!!! :)

After recess, we came back in and he practiced writing the letter A.  While he's still a little young to be writing, he did enjoy trying to do it!!  He also has an insect coloring book, so he colored a picture of ants too.

And then we finished the school day by having a snack of cookies and milk.  For the cookies, I got some Earth's Best Organic Letter of the day cookies (a big "thank you" to Sesame Street who is a sponsor of Earth's Best for not only supporting organic children's food, but also making it educational!!) .   They are a small crunchy cookie made to look like building blocks with different letters on them. I'm very OCD and organized, so I went through and sorted out all of the letters for each day so that I could make sure they were all ready and separated!!! :)

And that's it!  Just a simple school day to get aquainted with the letter.  I thought it would be much easier and less confusing for him if we stuck to only one letter per day...and it has really worked.  He seems to have learned a lot about the letters from each day and retains the information reall well.

We just worked on B yesterday, and I've also included a picture of the craft for it as well.  He made a boat and colored a picture of Big Bird.  We also made another character reference sheet and used a picture of his cousin, BJ as well as a picture of a piece of broccoli for good measure.  For lunch, we had broccoli, bananas and berry yogurt.  He managed to see some birds at recess, along with playing with a balloon.  And ended the day with more Earth's Best letter cookies and milk!  :)

I hope this helps anyone interested in educating your toddler at home.  It's an easy way to incorporate letters by still letting them do things they love!

Photography for Beginners

I've always had a passion for photography from a very young age.  There's just something so inspiring and wonderful about being able to capture images that will last a lifetime (whether it be of family or friends or just a beautiful flower that you pass by)!  After having my son, that passion grew...knowing that I wanted to sieze every opportunity to get every second of his life on a still frame to cherish as the years go by.  Also, I've recently started dabbling in photography at a more "business level"...taking photos of my friends' kids, editing photos for people, etc.  With that being said, I made it a mission to take and produce the best quality of photographs I can in order to help better preserve my son's childhood and to please the people who ask for my services.  I'm by no means a professional, and I'm not going to pretend like I know everything about photography and act like all of my pictures are art gallery worthy, because I'm still a beginner myself, but I thought I would help out anyone interested in how to go about getting started taking great photos without going to a professional.  You CAN take your own and they WILL look beautiful and flawless!

First, I started off by researching cameras.  I really had no clue where to begin as far as buying one, so I went to the wonderful world wide web to find out as much as I could about different cameras.  All I had ever used in the past was point and shoot cameras (mainly and most recently, my trusty Nikon Coolpix, but I had outgrown its capabilities), so getting an SLR camera was a goal of mine.  I spent a lot of time finding out what an SLR camera really is and what it does, I watched numerous tutorials on how to use them, how to take good quality photos with one and compared tons of reviews on which was the best.  After months of looking, I finally took the plunge and got a camera.  And I must say, it was well worth the effort and the cost!  There are so many great digital SLR cameras out there, and I really don't think you can go wrong with any of them!  It may seem pricey for a camera, but I can assure you that you get what you pay for.  I ended up choosing a Canon...even after years of faithfulness to Nikon, the Canon just seemed to have everything I was looking for.  But honestly, they are all nice, you just have to find the one that suits best what you plan on using it for.  My advice....do what I did and do your research...ask around, do some digging and find out what the best fit for you is.

Next, invest in a good editing program.  While there are many free options available online, they just don't provide the quality and capability that the better, more costly programs do.   It may seem like you are paying a lot for a simple editing program, but I tell you, it's what makes a good photo become an amazing photo!   Not to mention that the cost of the program is going to seem small compared to the money you will save by not going to a professional photographer for all of your photo needs.  I opted for Lightroom by Photoshop.  There are many different programs out there, but I chose Lightroom simply because I could edit every aspect of a photo (ie the exposure, brightness, color, saturation, tint etc) just as if I were developing my own photos in a dark room (hence it's name...Lightroom).  But Adobe has many Photoshop options available and all will give you many different capabilities that you would not otherwise have without an editing program.  So my suggestion is to get one...whatever it may be...because it really does allow you to take your photos to the next level!

Next, it's all about lighting!  I encourage anyone seriously interested in taking quality photographs to get to know your light.  (sounds a bit silly, I know, but I'll try to explain what I mean)  The lighting in a photo can manifest it into something so much more beautiful.  A simple beam of sunshine can work wonders for an otherwise "ok" photo.  There are technological ways of working with light through your camera...using the shutter speed, flash, etc, but there are also so many ways of working with natural light around the subject.  My words of wisdom on this (which can be taken as you wish), do some homework and learn the different ways you can work with lighting.  There are many tutorials and informational websites and books that will walk you through lighting techniques.  And another way to learn is to just play with lighting while taking photos....be aware of the light you have to work with in the environment around you, notice the details of the lighting and take photos at different angles to see where the light falls on the subject and what works best for the subject matter at hand.  Once you become aware of the lighting, you will find that there are many different angle options to taking what would normally be a one angle photo.

And lastly, try to convey a "feeling" when taking a photo...something that a viewer can relate to.  The most admired photos are ones in which the photgrapher makes us feel like we know the subject in the photo or makes us feel something about the photo.  In my personal opinion, especially when photographing people, I prefer to let them do what they want to do, let them just be in a natural setting, while I work around them.  I'm not a fan of forcing someone to sit and smile for photos.  I think a photo is much more genuine and heartfelt when you capture people being themselves and living life....especially with children.  While I understand that there is a time and place when sitting portraits are wanted, I think truly great photos of people come from them enjoying life and portraying that to a viewer.

I hope these tips can be useful in your pursuit to achieve high quality photos for your own endeavors.  So go out there and start taking some photos!  Happy shooting to you all!  :)

Worth the reading...

I recently read this article, and had to share it! As I was browsing through one of my favorite websites (organicsoul.com), I came across this article, "5 Easy Ways to Help the Earth", so I thuoght I would pass it along with hope that you will heed the advice given.  Even if you don't do everything listed here, even a few things will greatly benefit our Earth!  And they aren't time-consuming things, just some minor adjustments to your way of life that could make a huge impact on our environment.

Save the Planet

With the world’s population growing, resources dwindling, and ecosystems facing threat, the earth is in desperate need of a superhero. Lucky for us, we can all play part without  devoting much time away from our ever demanding lives filled with family, work, and school. Here are 5 simple ways to help the earth! The best part? You can get them all done in under 30 minutes! Wow!

Number 1. Donate to a Charity

If you’re looking for a quick way to make a difference, donate. Although this is a largely detached way to get involved, it nevertheless can lead to world-changing results. Find a charity that speaks to you  – one of our favorites is Trees for the Future – and donate a nice sum. It could mean making the difference for animals, ecosystems, and our fellow men and women.

Number 2. Opt out of Snail Mail

Paper mail is so last century anyways. For all your bills, bank statements, and information you get from those organizations or markets you’re involved with, opt into electronic mail. This will literally saves tons of paper over time. This goes for those coupons too – if you don’t use them, contact the sender and get them to take you off the mailing list. With less paper used, more tress will stand strong!

Number 3. Reuse that Bag

Plastic or paper? Neither, please. It takes all of 30 seconds to buy a reusable bag while you’re the grocery store and after you do, you’ll be on your way to reducing your ‘bag print’ – something many people fail to consider. Better yet, if you want to devote about 10 minutes to this, make your own bag out of an old t-shirt. It’s simple, quick, and saves tons of resources (plus, you get to keep that favorite shirt of yours!). Here’s how!

Number 4. Don’t Eat that Meat

This is really more of a conscious decision, making it take all of 5 seconds to do. Livestock requires huge, intensive sources of energy. The industry is vastly overworked and the negative aspects that come along with this industry are too large to ignore – it is literally choking the Gulf of Mexico to death. By switching to more vegetables – at least 2-3 days out of the week – you’ll be curbing your use by a huge proportion. If everyone did this, it could literally save the world – there would be less methane gas, we could create forests where farms are now, and the ocean would get some much needed relief.

Number 5.  Buy Organic

Like the last one, this is a value choice that takes far under 5 minutes. Despite the simplicity of making the choice to buy organic, the positive results are too large to pass up. Organic farming supports cleaner air, water, and earth. It promotes the sustainable use of our world. It creates jobs in a industry ruled by industrial machinery. It promotes better health for you, your friends, and your family. Switch to organic! It really doesn’t cost much more (besides, you’ll save money by not purchasing as much meat) and it you can take pride in the fact that you’re voting with your dollars.

Sausage & Zucchini Yummy!

As much as I love zucchini bread, it tends to get a little boring after I've made about 30 loaves with all the fresh zucchini in the summer!  So I'm always looking for new recipes to incorporate zucchini and get some use out of it with all that I yield from my garden. Leave it up to my mom to come up with a very tasty and easy recipe that I now love to make!

It really doesn't have a name, so I decided to name it "Sausage & Zucchini Yummy"...it was the most accurate description that I could come up with! :)

Ingredients
  • ground sausage (I prefer to use spicy because we like it, but you could use any ground sausage you like)
  • fresh, sliced zucchini
  • spaghetti sauce (I make my own sauce, but you could use any you like)
  • fresh, grated cheddar cheese

Directions
  1. Fry sausage in a pan until cooked.
  2. Add sliced zucchini and spaghetti sauce and simmer until zucchini is fully cooked (will be tender and soft when cooked completely)
  3. Plate up and sprinkle with the grated cheddar cheese.
  4. *Optional*- Sometimes we use this as a spaghetti sauce and use it on top of spaghetti noodles.  Alone or with noodles, it's really good!
And that's it!  An easy, delicious meal with fresh veggies that your family will be sure to love!

The Greener Side of Being Beautiful!

As women well know, it's not easy being beautiful!!  There are many steps (and products) that we go through to ensure that we have beautiful skin, beautiful hair, beautiful nails, beautiful feet...but unfortunately, most of the products offered for our skin, hair, nails and feet are full of toxic chemicals that, while they may help in the beautifying process, can actually be harming us!  Even some products that claim to be "all natural" contain ingredients that have bee proven to be harmful to our bodies.  So I set out on a mission to find ways to stay beautiful, using only products that are safe and organic.  And not only are they better for you, they actually work and can be easily made at home using things that you probably have in your refrigerator or cupboards!  The ingredients in these actually come from natural, God-made things....not man-made chemicals created in a lab somewhere!  And I don't know about you, but that sounds a lot better to me!!!  If these facts alone don't curb your way of thinking and buying the store products, just imagine all of the packaging waste that can be avoided by making your own products!  Not to mention the harmful effects these products have on our water when we wash them off and they make their way down the drain and into the waterways!  By using organic products, we are avoiding the risk of contaminating water and reducing packaging waste!  It's a win/win scenario for being a greener you! So read on and see some of the simple, safe and organic ways of making yourself as beautiful as you can be!!!! :)

Dry Skin Moisturizing Treatment
(This will yield one application)

Ingredients
  • 2 Tablespoons real mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil (you can substitute the olive oil with any oil...be it safflower oil, baby oil or whatever you may have on hand)
Directions
  1. Mix ingredients together
  2. Smooth mixture onto any areas that may need it....face, neck, rough elbows, knees, heels, etc.
  3. Leave on for approximately 20 min.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water
This works great for rough heels in the summer and I've even used it for my hair when it gets to feeling dry.

Honey-Avocado Invigorating and Revitalizing Hair Treatment
(This will yield one application)

Ingredients
  • 1 medium avocado- peeled and seeded
  • 2 Tablespoons honey
Directions
  1. Mash ingredients together in a small bowl
  2. Massage into hair
  3. Leave on for 20-30 min
  4. Rinse with warm water
Leaves hair looking shiny and healthy and helps bring body back into it.

Nail Strengthener
(This will yield enough for 20-30 applications)

Ingredients
  • 2 teaspoons castor oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon wheat germ oil  (this can be found at your local health food store)
Directions
  1. Combine ingredients in a sealable container.  (I used a small glass baby food jar)
  2. Shake well before each use
  3. Rub a small amount onto each nail
  4. Leave on 3-5 min
  5. Wipe clean with a cotton ball
I had a problem with my nails chipping or breaking while gardening or doing housework and consistant use of this really helps strengthen them!

Honey- Cocoa Butter Lip Balm
(This will yield enough for 100 applications)

Ingredients
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey
  • 3/4 teaspoon beeswax- grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure cocoa butter
  • 1 Vitamin E capsule
  • Optional- flavored oil of your choice (ie. vanilla, peppermint)
*Note- the beeswax and Vitamin E capsules can be found at your local health food stores.

Directions
  1. Combine oil, honey, wax and cocoa butter in a small saucepan and heat on low until melted.
  2. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 2-3 min
  3. Add contents of Vitamin E capsule (and flavored oil if you choose to use it)
  4. Pour into a container of your choice.  (I had a small tin that I used)
Once this cools completely, it is the consistancy of any other lip balm.

Skin Exfoliant
(This will yield multiple applications...the number depending on how much/how often you choose to use it)

Ingredients
  • 1 cup coarse sea salt
  • 1/2 cup oil (I use olive oil, but you can opt to use baby oil, canola oil, castor oil...whatever you have on hand)
Directions
  1. Stir the ingredients together in a bowl
  2. Pour the mixture into a screw top container (I used an old peanut butter jar...since this product is going to be used in the shower, it's best to use a container with a plastic lid to prevent rusting/corrosion of a metal lid from the water)
  3. Leave to set for 24 hrs
  4. Apply mixture to any dry areas that you wish to exfoliate
  5. Rinse off in shower water
This is a great way to invigorate your skin and exfoliate all of the dead skin....best for arms and legs...especially in dry winter months!

Revitalizing Face Mask
(This will yield 1 application)

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup chopped cucumber
  • 1/2 cup chopped avocado
  • 1 egg white
  • 2 teaspoons powdered milk (I've found that powdered goat's milk works great for this!)
Directions
  1. Combine ingredients in a blender until smooth
  2. Apply to face and neck in a circular motion
  3. Leave on for 30 min or until dry
  4. Rinse with warm water  (best if the warm rinse is followed by a cold water splash to invigorate the skin!)
This really is a great mask.  It has been proven that avocado and cucumber both help our skin, so it's a great easy way to combine both into a mask.  Not to mention that egg whites help to tighten skin...leaving it looking younger!  Also, just a note- this mask mixture will keep in the refrigerator for about 30 min, so you can make it up ahead of time if you would like.  Not to mention that a cold mask really helps invigorate the skin!

Hand Softener
(This will yield one application)

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • enough oil to make a paste (again, I use olive oil, but any oil can be used)
Directions
  1. Mix ingredients together in a bowl to form a paste
  2. Apply to hands (I apply it in the same way as I would wash my hands or put on lotion...just rub it around thoroughly onto hands)
  3. Rinse with warm water
The brown sugar combined with oil really does help to soften hands!!  The brown sugar acts as kind of an exfoliate while the oil helps to soften and moisten the skin.  I really like to use this in summer months when my hands tend to get rough from all of the yard work and gardening.  It helps keep the calluses from yard work softened.

End-of-Day Foot Spa
(This will yield one application)

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Epsom salts (can be found in almost any drug store)
  • scented oils of choice (I love lavender for this!!!!  It's very calming and relaxing.  You can also use rosewood, sandlewood or patchouli for a calming effect.  But for a more rejuvinating effect, you can use lemongrass or eucalyptus or peppermint.)
  • water
  • foot bath or a very large plastic bowl/container (you can even use the bathtub with water filled to about ankle height)
Directions
  1. Fill the container you choose to use with warm water to ankle height
  2. Add Epsom salts until dissolved
  3. Add scented oils
  4. Soak feet for 10-15 min
  5. Pat dry
Who doesn't love a great foot bath after a long day??!!!  This is a great way to relax and treat yourself to something special in a very simple way.  This is especially nice if you are on your feet all day long!

And there you have it!  A few simple ways to help beautify yourself without contamination of harmful chemicals!  I highly recommend these....even if you don't use them all of the time, it's a great way to pamper yourself at home in a safe, organic way, while saving some money too!  And that's what being a "green at home mama" is all about!!!!  :)

I Love Composting!!!

With the warm weather rolling in, it's a great time to reap the rewards of all my hard composting work throughout the year!  If you don't compost, then this article is for you!  I've been a firm believer of composting for years!  And now I would like to share some tips and knowledge of composting and just my personal opinions on how great it is!

First of all, it's a great way to reduce the amount of trash you take to the curb!  I will get into further detail as to what kinds of trash can be composted further in this post.
Secondly, it's an easy, cheap way to get organic, nutrient-filled soils for your vegetable and flower gardens without even leaving your home!  I don't even have to buy fertilizers or potting soils anymore with the amount of soil I get from my compost bin!
And lastly, depending on the type of container you wish to use, you can make a compost bin from almost any scrap materials you may have lying around your garage or barn!

To begin, you need a bin.  There are several different options you can use....from chicken wire/fencing material to metal garbage cans to the more common plastic bins found in stores.  Whatever option you choose, just be sure that it's made from a material that won't rot...wood isn't a good material to use in making a compost bin, because it can break down from the common processes of breaking down that occur in composting.  If you choose chicken wire or fencing, simply wrap it in a circular shape and tie with plastic ties or wire ties to hold it together.  If you choose to use a metal garbage can, be sure to drill holes into the sides of the can to help aerate the material.  And if you choose to buy a bin from the store (this is the method I chose), there are many different options available...from simple square plastic bottomless bins with a lid, to circular bins that can be turned in order to aerate the material inside.
If you choose on of the simpler methods that don't have an aerator method for turning your compost material, then you need to manually turn the material on your own by simply using a shovel or pitchfork and occasionally turning the material inside.  The process of aeration allows the composting process to occur quicker.

Next, you need to accumulate products to compost.  The list is pretty extensive as to what you can compost.  Among the list of compostable items are kitchen scraps such as fruit and vegetable clippings, skins and rinds, coffee grounds, tea bags, coffee filters, egg shells, and leftovers.  Just be sure that any of these kitchen scraps do NOT include meat, poultry or fish products.  These are things that cannot be composted.  In addition to the kitchen scraps, you can also compost newspapers and shredded papers (I don't use the any "glossy" newspaper ads or paper), and you can use fallen leaves in autumn and grass clippings and flower clippings in spring and summer.  For a more extensive list, you can visit this website, which provides an extensive list of compostable products for easy reference.  http://eartheasy.com/grow_compost.html  (not only does this website provide a list of compostable materials, but it also gives useful tips in getting started with a compost bin and how to maintain your compost bin, as well as answering questions you may have on the composting process)
Another website beneficial in composting is http://www.composting101.com/

And lastly, you just need to maintain your bin as you add material.  Every few days (I normally do it once a week or so), you will need to turn your compost material, if you don't have a turnable bin. It's as easy as taking a pitchfork or shovel and simply moving the material around to allow it to blend and get air.   When you add kitchen scraps, they tend to be wet or watery, so it's best to top them off with something dry when you add them to the bin.  You can use leaves, straw, grass clippings or other yard materials to do this.  You can also add fertilizers to your compost bin to help add nutrients, as well as help speed up the composting process.  (I choose not to add fertilizer, because I want to keep my material as organic as possible, but it is an option if you want!)

And that's pretty much it!  The more material you add, the more soil you will yield! I use the soil for adding to my vegetable garden as well as my flower gardens.  The soil is very rich in nutrients and helps give your plants what they need to grow!  You can have a compost bin no matter where you live and it's highly beneficial to whatever plants you intend on growing!

Now go out there, and get composting!!!!!!! :)

Spring is Here!!!

With the long winter coming to an end, I'm ready to embrace the warm weather and sunshine of Spring with open arms!  One of my favorite things to do when the weather warms up is to head to the outdoors and enjoy nature!  And when I can't be outdoors all of the time, I like to incorporate little things from the outdoors into our everyday life...through decorating, through crafts or even just opening the windows to let the sunshine and breezes come into our home!
This craft that I would like to share with you is just one example of bringing the outdoors in!  It's a cute, simple craft for children of all ages to do in just a few easy steps.

I've nicknamed thes cute little guys "Mother Nature's Peeps" :)

Materials

  • various printed cardstock
  • solid color cardstock of choice
  • orange cardstock
  • black marker
  • small twigs
  • small leaves (I used leaves from a Myrtle plant)
  • scissors
  • glue
  • hole punch

Directions
  1. Cut bodies of birds in "egg" shapes using a solid colored card stock of choice.
  2. Cut beaks of birds using orange card stock
  3. Cut tail feathers of birds using printed card stock of choice.  I chose to use "boy" patterns with browns and blues since I have a son, but any patterns will work!
  4. Glue beaks, tail feathers and two small leaves for wings and twigs for legs onto the bodies of the birds.
  5. Punch hole in the top of each bird and place ribbon through the holes.
  6. Tie ribbon off for hanging.
(Additional Note- Instead of making individual birds, you can also make a mobile of birds or even a birdie garland for hanging as Spring decoration as well! )

We used these cute little guys as "Springy gifts" for grandmas, aunts and friends!

Organic Meat

I've tried the whole vegetarian scene and have come up with one conclusion....I LOVE MEAT!!!!   I just can't resist the urge to eat a juicy steak or burger!  BUT...I have a real problem with the way animals are raised and processed in order for us to consume them.  Coming from a family that raised our own livestock for eating, I know that animals have to eventually be butchered in order to eat them (sad, I know, but it's a fact of life).  However, they don't have to be raised in unhealthy, disgusting conditions and taken to giant manufacting plants where they are mass-butchered in dirty facilities.  At this time, my family doesn't have the means or the land to raise our own meat, so I've found a place that is doing it right, and I wanted to share this rare gem with you!   For those of you interested in getting organic meat, raised on a family farm and processed in the best way possible, then this place is for you.  Rus-Men Farms...a family stemming from generations of farmers, set out to provide the best quality meats possible.  It's a farm located on the outskirts of Galion with a variety of meats available at affordable prices. Here is a link to their website, where you can get insight on the history of their farm, the meats that are available and information on prices and ordering meat.

I highly recommend them and hope that you check them out!  You won't be disappointed!!!!

Our Favorite Valentine's Day Craft!

I try to do a different craft with my son each day, along with a fun lesson to go with the craft.  To pay tribute to love on Valentine's Day, we did this fun little craft that is sure to be a hit with any child!!  It's a great way to let your child have a hands-on experience with a craft, with the end product being something that you can cherish for years to follow!

Yarn Hearts

Ingredients
  • Colored yarn cut into about 1 ft pieces (we used red, pink and white yarn for Valentine's Day)
  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • parchment paper/wax paper/or baking sheet
  • heart shaped cookie cutter
Directions
  1. Make cornstarch glue by combining 1/4 cup cornstarch and 1/2 cup water into a sauce pan.  Heat over medium heat until mixture thickens into a paste.
  2. Let cornstarch glue cool until it's safe for your child to put their hands into it.
  3. Place heart shaped cookie cutter onto parchment paper
  4. Let your child dip pieces of colored yarn into the cornstarch glue until it is fully covered.
  5. Run fingers over glue covered yarn to remove excess glue, and place into cookie cutter.  (placement of the yarn isn't really crucial...I've found that these hearts turn out cute no matter how the yarn is placed into the cutter)
  6. Continue dipping the yarn into the glue until you have a filled the cookie cutter about half way.
  7. Press yarn firmly into the cookie cutter and then remove the cutter, leaving a heart of yarn.
  8. Continue making hearts until you run out of yarn or glue.
  9. Let hearts stand overnight to dry.

Once dried, you can add ribbon to these to make an ornament or simply use them as Valentine's Day decorations as is.  They are a cute, inexpensive craft that children have a lot of fun making!!

**On a side note, these aren't limited to just Valentine's Day.  You can use cookie cutters of various shapes and yarns of many colors to create lots of different yarn things for many different occasions.  We've done pumpkins for Halloween and some things for Christmas too (trees, stars, bells).

A Healthy, New Twist to an Old Favorite!

Rice crispy treats are always a favorite among children!  However, loaded with sugar and fat, they aren't the healthiest snacks to give our little ones.  So I've come up with a healthier, less fattening take on the old favorite.  And not only is it better for your children, but you can make them out of all organic products as well.  Not to mention that the cost of making them at home is much cheaper than buying them in a store!   Hope you thrifty, organic mamas love this recipe as much as I do...and hope your children love it more!!  :)

Healthy Rice Crispy Treats

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter
  • 6 cups brown rice cereal
  • 2/3 cup of your favorite dried fruit
  • cooking spray
Directions
  1. Combine peanut butter and honey in a pot over medium heat.  Heat until melted (about 2-3 min)
  2. Add brown rice and dried fruit and stir until mixture is sticky and rice is fully covered.
  3. Spray a 9x13 pan with cooking spray.
  4. Fill the pan with rice mixture and press firmly into pan.
  5. Put into refrigerator and let cool for approximately 30 min.
  6. Cut into squares when cooled and serve.
These are a yummy, healthy treat that your children are sure to enjoy!!!!

*Note- some fun ways to liven up these treats are to add food coloring to the peanut butter/honey mixture in the pot for a colorful special occasion, substitute different things for the fruit for a different taste, or cut into fun shapes for a more festive look!

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

After many years of growing up making our own homemade salsa, canning tomatoes and other garden veggies, I decided to take a shot at making my own homemade spaghetti sauce.  I will be straight-forward and honest when I say, it isn't easy, it's pretty messy and it's very time consuming!!!  However, it is so worth the hard work...it tastes delicious and fresh, it full of flavor and it's better than anything you can get from a jar or can!  And I also take satisfaction in knowing that all of the products that I use to make it are homegrown and organic!  So not only does it taste good, but it's good for you too!  For all of you organic mamas like me who want to give your families the healthiest, safest foods possible, this is for you!

Ingredients
  • at least 2 bushels of tomatoes
  • fresh herbs -I used basil, oregano and parsley
  • garlic powder to taste
  • tomato paste (enough to thicken the amount of tomatoes you use)
  • *optional* veggies of your choice (I used zuchini, green beans, and carrots)
  • salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Wash tomatoes.  Boil water in a large pot.  Once water is boiling, add whole tomatoes to fill the pot. (they won't all fit, but just add as many as you can)  Leave tomatoes in for just a few minutes. Remove tomatoes and place into a large bowl or kitchen sink filled with ice water.  This is a step that a lot of people don't do, but it's such a valuable one!  By boiling the tomatoes for just a short time and blanching them in ice water, it loosens the skins, making it a breeze to remove the skin, which you don't want to add into the sauce!  Once the tomatoes are cooled, you can peel the skin right off.  Repeat this for all of your tomatoes.  After all of the tomatoes are peeled, slice the tomatoes in half, and remove the seeds and juices inside.  Something I like to do is to put the insides of the tomatoes through a strainer into a bowl, so that I have tomato juice that I can put into jars and can separately later on!  (it's a good way to get as much as possible out of the tomatoes that you use!)  Next, once you have all of your tomatoes seeded, chop them into about 1 inch cubes.  Add to the large pot you will use for your spaghetti sauce.  Now finely chop and add any herbs you like...I opted for lots of basil, oregano and parsely.  Add enough to flavor your sauce as you like it.  I love basil, so I use a lot of it and just filled with the oregano and parsely. Next, add tomato paste.  This will help thicken your sauce.  Now add garlic powder to taste.  I don't add fresh garlic because I've been told that it tends to get bitter during storage, so I opt for powder.  (but I do add fresh garlic to it when I prepare it for spaghetti) Also add salt and pepper to taste.  I put just a bit of garlic powder in it also for some extra flavor, but that's optional.  And last, finely chop any vegetables that you would like in your sauce.  This is a step that can be skipped, but I've found that it's a good way to get more veggies into our diets by adding them to stuff like this where they blend right in with the sauce!  With a persnickity 2 year old, I sneak veggies into almost anything I can when I can!!! :)
Cook your sauce on a low heat until thickened.  This normally takes at least 2-3 hours, but I let it go longer than that.  The longer you cook it, the thicker it will be.  So if you don't mind runny sauce, you don't have to cook it long!
Once the sauce reaches a consistency that you are satisfied with, turn off heat and let it cool.  After it cools, simply pour it into freezer bags.  (*Note- I always make sure to label the bags with what it is and the date I made it prior to adding the sauce so I know...I make it multiple times throughout the garden season, so I like to know the dates so I can use the older stuff first)
You can always can the sauce if you prefer, but I've found that freezing it works just as well.  Not to mention that the bags are easy to stack in a freezer and don't take up much space!

And there you have it....yummy homemade spaghetti sauce that your family is sure to love!  Whenever you want to make spaghetti, just pop a bag out of the freezer, remove from the bag and put it into a pot frozen and cook it...or thaw it by putting the bag into a pot of boiling water for just a minute or so and then pour it into a pot for cooking.
Enjoy!!!

Fun, Easy Homemade Crafts and Activities for Children!

Being a stay at home mom to an energetic toddler, I need to be well-prepared with lots of activities and crafts that we can do at home to keep his little hands busy and out of things that he isn't allowed to be in! :)  I've found some things that he loves doing that I want to share with all you moms out there looking for crafts and activities to keep your children entertained.  I realize that a lot of moms don't have the opportunity to stay home every day with your children, but most of these things are very easy and don't take a lot of time, so it can be something done in the evenings or weekends with your kids.  And not only are these fun things for your children, but they are very inexpensive for the "thrifty" mom and also safe, eco-friendly things as well, for all of you earth conscious mommies like myself! :)

One of the staples of our daily activities is PLAYDOUGH!  What kid doesn't love to play with Playdough??  I have fond memories of my childhood at home with my mom, playing with her ever so special homemade playdough. So, of course, that's the first thing I would like to share.  There are many variations to homemade playdough recipes that can be found online, but the one I use is what I got from my mom.

"Mom's Homemade Playdough"
Materials

  • Bowl
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • food coloring
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • if you feel like getting really crazy with your playdough, you can even go as far as to add glitter, confetti or other fun additions to it!
Directions
  1. In bowl, mix water, salt, oil, and enough food coloring to make a bright color.
  2. Gradually add flour and cornstarch until the mixture reaches the consistency of bread dough.
  3. Store covered. (I reuse clean plastic peanut butter jars to store it in...but a ziploc bag would work too)
And there you have it...easy as that!  I know it's convenient to just go to the store and buy playdough, but I really love this, because it's something your children can help you make, it's free of chemicals, and it's so much more fun for a child when they have a hands-on experience in making it, then getting to play with it!  And while I don't recommend letting your child eat playdough, it is safe if ingested!

The next thing I would like to share is a great thing if you have a little explorer like I do who loves the outdoors and all of the creepy crawlies that come with it! I've found that with just a few simple items, we could make a fun "bug jar" to put all of the little insects and bugs into that he finds out and around the yard.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ  Bug Jars Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ

Materials
  • clean jar with lid (I reused an old baby food jar, but any jar would work...peanut butter jars, mason jars, spaghetti sauce jars, etc.)
  • colorful bug stickers (I had foam bug stickers on hand, so that's what I used)
  • ice pick or screwdriver (for punching holes in the jar lid)
Directions
  1. Let your child place stickers onto the jar.
  2. Poke holes with ice pick/screwdriver into jar lid as breathe holes for bugs.  (I don't recommend letting your child help with this step for obvious reasons...ice picks are dangerous in little hands!!)

And that's it!  It's a fun, inexpensive item to give to your child for a day of outdoor exploring and bug catching!  (I even made up a little "buggy quote" and put it on a piece of paper and glued it to the front for a little bit more fun!)

The next thing is a favorite of my little guy!  He has a fascination with animals of all kinds and loves to look through books with pictures of animals.  After searching for and buying numerous animal books for him, I decided to take it upon myself to come up with a way to make a book of his most favorite animals.  So, after just a few easy steps, I managed to make up a fun little book for him that he adores.

Animal Book

Materials
  • small picture album book with plastic insertable pages
  • pictures of animals printed from computer

Directions
  1. Print pictures of your child's favorite animals from your computer's clip art or from pictures online
  2. Cut pictures down to size of pages of the photo album

I let my son pick out the pictures of the animals he wanted, and I then let him help insert them into the pages.  If your child loves animals as much as mine, this will be a huge hit!  My son sits and looks through this book for extended amounts of time!   It was a simple, cheap way to get a book full of the specific animals that he adores and it was a fun way for mommy to give him something that he loves! :)

The next thing is a fun craft that I shared just recently with the children at our church, after trying it out here at home with my son.  Being a devout Christian family, we instill Christian values in our son's life.  Among these things is saying at blessing at our mealtime.  With my son being such a young age, it's hard for him to say too many blessings, but we have found one that he loves.  In our church, we have taught the children to sing the Johnny Appleseed song before snacks, so that's the song we chose to teach our son for his mealtime blessing.  In an attempt to remind him of his blessing as he grows older and learns to read, but in the meantime, just give him a friendly reminder of singing his blessing, I decided to come up with a craft we could make that included his blessing.  Below is a picture of what he and I made.
Since the song mentions apples, I decided to go with a cute apple design and just put the blessing words in the center.  I keep this hanging in the dining room by the table as a friendly reminder for him to sing his blessings. Although, he loves to sing his blessings and we don't have to remind him very often, it's a cute way of having the words or the reminder available to him as he needs them!  :)  This apple design could be used for many different things...as a card for a teacher or just as a craft to make an apple!  I simply used card stock papers, cut the red into the shape of an apple, cut out a stem and leaf, printed out the blessing and glued everything together.  Simple as that.

Next, we made a very fun craft at Easter time that was a huge hit with grandmas!  Easter lillies are a favorite flower during Easter and spring, so we came up with a cute way to make them from some simple materials and my son's handprints!

Handprint Easter Lillies

Materials
  • white constuction paper
  • green and yellow pipe cleaners (I uses a thicker pipecleaner for the yellow to give it more of a "lilly" effect)
  • scissors
  • ribbons
  • pencil or pen
  • clear Scotch tape
Directions
  1. Trace child's hand on white construction paper and cut out.
  2. take pencil or pen and curl fingers of the hand outward.
  3. Connect one yellow and one grean pipe cleaner together at ends
  4. wrap handprint cut-out around the pipecleaners and the connection point and secure with tape
  5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 to make multiple flowers
  6. tie a few lillies together with ribbon to make a bouquet

These were a great gift to give to grandmas and aunts for Easter!  And my son loved the hands-on experience in making these!

Another fun craft we did for summer was a paper plate turtle.  It's a fun way to make a turtle out of things you have around the house!

Paper Plate Turtles

Materials
  • white paper plate
  • green construction paper
  • glue
  • crayons/colored pencils
  • googly eyes (these aren't required...you can just as easily draw eyes on the turtle, but I had them from another craft, so we used them)
Directions
  1. Cut green construction paper into shape of turtle head and also 5 small pointed pieces for legs and tail.
  2. Color any pattern for a turtle shell on the bottom side of the paper plate.  (I chose a flower pattern since my son just made scribble lines for his "coloring")
  3. Glue head, legs and tail to the top side of the paper plate (the side you would eat off of).
  4. Glue googly eyes to the turtle's head (or color them on).

This was one of Jackson's favorite crafts...he plays with the turtle quite often!

In addition to these crafts, there are so many fun and exciting crafts that we have made, including handprint turkeys for Thanksgiving, handprint wreaths for Christmas and lots more! But these were just a few I wanted to share at this time.

*Note- Be sure to check back in the future, as I plan on updating my blog with lots more fun, inexpensive craft ideas!
